"With this approach, when a thought arises, you look at it and see that it is simply a mental arising. It is nothing separate that you need to be afraid or attached to. We need to apply this in a very personal way. For instance, if a feeling of strong desire comes up - or fear, sadness, compassion, or whatever it may be - at the moment it arises, you see it as a display of the nature of your mind. When you can see your feelings and thoughts in this way, then you can relax with them.
One analogy for this approach is meeting someone you didn't know before. Once you get to know people, then you recognize them. A second analogy is snow falling on a lake. When snow falls on a lake, it merges into the water, but this doesn't happen the instant the snow touches the lake. It takes a moment for the snow to melt into the water. It is the same with thoughts and emotions at this stage. You experience them with awareness, and they don't last long. They dissolve and don't become a problem.
Usually when a feeling comes up, we create a whole story around it. Our emotion is not seen as a passing mental arising but as something separate that is happening to us. This is what we call duality. We think we have to do something about the feeling, or else we won't be able to get rid of it. But that's not so. Even if we get rid of that particular feeling, there are always more feelings coming up.
If you can see the empty nature of the emotions, then you can free yourself."
